Ant Nest ( Myrmecodia Pendans )

 

Ant nest ( Myrmecodia pendans ) or called longkong in Papua is a plant that belongs to the Rubiaceae family . The Rubiaceae family consists of 5 genera (Myermecodia, Anthorrhiza, Hydnophytum, Myrmephytum and Squamellaria) which have tubers and are places where ants live. Myrmecodia is the second most abundant genus in the world, after the genus Hydnophytum. These ant nests usually attach to host plants to survive. This plant comes from Papua. One of the places where it is spread is Jayawijaya, Papua. [1]

Ant nests are known to be rich in active compounds of flavonoids, tocopherols, phenolics and important minerals such as Calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), potassium (K), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), Phosphorus (P) and Magnesium (Mg). and other compounds that are useful as antioxidants and anticancer. This plant is used traditionally in Malaysia and Indonesia as an alternative treatment for cancer and tumors, particularly those of the breast, liver, lung, ovary and brain. In addition, this plant can also be used to lower glucose levels in the blood. [2] The rhizome extract is used to treat heart disease.
